Have been noticing that the lights in your home have been flickering lately? It’s time to call in a professional to check your electrical system. Older homes may still have either outdated knob and tube or aluminum wiring. Replacing the outdated wiring is a job that needs to be completed by an electrician. But how do you make sure that you are choosing the right one? Here are some tips to help you find the right person for the job.
Questions to Ask When Choosing an Electrician
1. How long have you been working in this field? It’s important to find someone who knows the code book, but also has practical experience as well. You want to work with someone who understands the value of providing good customer service.
2. Are you licensed, bonded and insured? The contractor should hold a valid electrician’s license. This means they have completed the required education and training. The contractor should also carry liability insurance in the event he, or one of his employees, is injured while working on your property. Ask for the contractor’s bond number and certificate to confirm that he is bonded.
3. Who will be performing the work on my property? If the business owner will not do the the work personally, ask about the credentials of whoever will be completing the project. Employees should be fully trained electricians. Apprentices are not allowed to work on jobs unless they are supervised by a trained electrician.
4. Do you offer a warranty on work performed? Find whether the parts or labor is under warranty after the job has been completed. If so, how long is the warranty in effect? You’ll want to hire an electrician who is prepared to stand behind his work.
